Lancaster currently has a population of over 145 074 and is considered the 8th largest city in Los Angeles county. On the California side of the Mojave Desert, Lancaster is the second largest city. The city is separated from Bakersfield by the Tehachapi mountain range (to the north) and from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountains (to the south.) Lancaster is situated approximately 70 miles north from Los Angeles. It is the 9th fastest growing city in the United States, having gone from 37000 in 1977 to its current population of 145 074.
The standard of living is relatively high due to the high family income ($$61 298, which is higher then the national average) and low housing prices (lower then $302 000, which is the state average.) Over 70% of the population of Lancaster own their own homes.
The city of Lancaster puts a huge priority on local business and encourages growth by offering low priced land and less red tape as an incentive. Growth has rapidly increased over the years as distribution centers for companies such as Michaels, Rite Aid, and Sygma have developed.
The Lancaster Redevelopment Agency is responsible for attracting a variety of businesses to the city. It has recently attracted a variety of retail and dining businesses to Lancaster Town Center as well as Front Row Center. The Agency has designated five areas as business and industrial parks, which are Enterprise Business Park, Fox Field Industrial Corridor, Lancaster Business Park, North Lancaster Industrial Center, and North Valley Industrial Center.
One of the main goals of the city is to finish the revitalization of downtown. Currently, there are several historic buildings with a variety of modern amenities, such as a library and a performing arts center. The Lancaster Old Town Site (LOTS) is responsible for the renovation of business facades in the Old Town area.
In 2010, the BVLD was completed. The BVLD, which is located between 10th street west and sierra highway, is a revitalized stretch of Lancaster Boulevard that runs about a mile.
